Unless there is a severe economic downturn, social upheaval or environmental challenge that threatens the global security and production capacity of animal-derived foodstuffs, it is almost certain that the need to address animal welfare concerns within animal production systems will remain and grow. However, because of this, it is likely that animal welfare will become less of a separate issue, and simply become part of ‘how things are done’.
